People with cancer from underserved populations face a number of racial and socioeconomic status disparities that contribute to lung cancer incidence and mortality. Vamsidhar Velcheti, MD, director of the Thoracic Medical Oncology Program at Ƶ Health’s Perlmutter Cancer Center and leader of a Lung Cancer Health Equity SU2C Catalyst Research Team, speaks with OncLive On Air about the team’s plans to determine if using digital telehealth services and platforms can improve outcomes in Black, Hispanic, and Asian people with non-small cell lung cancer.
“Patients who are from underserved minority populations have special needs that need to be addressed, and the patient care and patient navigation services are really unique and have to be tailored to the population that each of our practices caters to,” says Dr. Velcheti, also a professor in the at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. “What we are trying to do here as part of the Stand Up 2 Cancer Health Equity grant is to pair those patient navigation services and patient care delivery services with advanced mobile technology–based solutions to improve a more integrated and effective care management solution for our patients.”
