Although breast cancer is rare in men, men with breast cancer have a 19 percent higher death rate than women, most likely because most men receive a diagnosis later. Ruth Oratz, MD, a medical oncologist at ��������Ƶ Health’s Perlmutter Cancer Center, tells NBC News that men might feel something abnormal in their breast, such as swelling or a lump.

“Pay attention to your own body,” says Dr. Oratz, also a clinical professor in the at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. “Don’t be ashamed or shy to go and ask for someone to check something out if you think it looks weird on your breast or even under the arm if there’s swelling.”
