Most anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears occur outside of professional stadiums and in recreational, everyday athletes, explains Guillem Gonzalez-Lomas, MD, assistant professor in the and surgeon at the Sports Medicine Center at Ƶ.
“Pro players are getting maintenance—nutrition, training room care—that the regular guy does not,” says Dr. Gonzalez-Lomas in an interview with GQ.
According to Dr. Gonzalez-Lomas, we engage in less spontaneous exercise activity as we age, especially people who play team sports and often repeat the same movements, which increases risk for injury.
