Some people with a form of early-stage breast cancer and low levels of a protein that indicates fast-growing cancer might be able to skip radiation treatment following surgery, according to a new study presented at the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology.
Deborah M. Axelrod, MD, director of clinical breast surgery and services at Ƶ Health’s Perlmutter Cancer Center, calls the study a “feel-good” message for patients with low-risk tumors. The study will help doctors understand which of their patients “can comfortably, with confidence” avoid radiation, Dr. Axelrod, also a professor in the at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, tells the Associated Press.
