As a member of Ƶ’s Pediatric Congenital Heart Program at Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital—34th Street, I assess heart murmurs and symptoms that may be related to the heart. I also diagnose and manage heart conditions in infants, including infants not yet born; children; and adolescents. One of my areas of expertise is echocardiography, which is ultrasound imaging of the heart.

My interest in pediatric cardiology began when I was a teen. I was born with a congenital heart defect and still vividly remember not only undergoing testing as a child, but also befriending the other children when I was hospitalized. In college, I had the opportunity to work with three incredible pediatric cardiologists. Deeply devoted to their patients, they performed research to better understand how the young heart works and how to manage congenital heart defects. My decision to become a pediatric cardiologist was shaped by these life experiences.

Combining patient care with teaching and research helps me to be the best doctor I can be. I am continually learning about conditions that affect the heart. My research lab focuses on cellular biology, especially as it relates to Barth syndrome, a rare disease that can affect the heart as well as other muscles, the white blood cells, and early growth in childhood. I have been honored by the American Heart Association as a “Rock Star of Research” and named in Castle Connolly’s “Top Doctors” series for the New York metro area.

It has been my privilege to work with a superb team at Ƶ for more than 25 years. We are dedicated to providing patients with the individualized care we would want for our own families. Our outcomes are among the best in the country.

I share the joys and the challenges of my patients’ journeys as they “graduate” from my practice. What I want most for my patients is for them to grow up as typically as possible.

Research Summary

My current primary focus is the biology of cardiolipin, the "signature" phospholipid found in mitochondria and critical for mitochondrial functions such as energy generation.  I am especially interested in the role of cardiolipin and mitochondria in the heart and during development.  As part of this research, we study the pathophysiological mechanisms that underlie Barth syndrome, a rare mitochondrial disorder caused by variants in the gene TAFAZZIN.  We have more recently begun to investigate additional gene defects in the cardiolipin biosynthetic pathway, including cardiolipin synthase (CRLS1).

Additional research interests include pediatric and congenital heart disease, autoimmune antibodies in the pathogenesis and clinical evolution of congenital heart block, and high-frequency ultrasound imaging of small animal models of human disease.  I have had very fruitful collaborations with many other researchers to study diverse scientific and clinical questions.  A common theme to my major research interests is cardiac development and how abnormal developmental trajectories lead to fetal and pediatric heart disease.
